CS2 VAC Ban Explained (2026)

A VAC ban (Valve Anti-Cheat) is the most serious penalty in Counter-Strike 2. It's permanent, it's public on your Steam profile, and it can't be lifted by support. This guide breaks down what triggers a VAC ban, how long it lasts, how it differs from other penalties, and how to keep your account clean.

What is a VAC ban?

VAC is Valve's automated anti-cheat. When it detects cheat software running with a VAC-secured game, it flags the account. A VAC ban permanently blocks that account from VAC-secured servers for that game. It is applied automatically — not by a moderator — and Valve intentionally delays some bans in waves so cheat developers can't instantly tell what was detected.

How long does a CS2 VAC ban last?

A VAC ban is permanent. There is no duration or expiry — the ban stays on the account forever. It also cannot be removed by contacting Steam Support; Valve's policy is that VAC bans are final. The only "reset" is a new account, which starts with no Prime, no items and a fresh (low) trust factor.

VAC ban vs game ban vs cooldown

  • VAC ban — automated cheat detection, permanent, shown publicly on your profile.
  • Game ban — issued via Valve Anti-Cheat/Overwatch or developer action for a specific game, also typically permanent and public.
  • Competitive cooldown — a temporary matchmaking timeout for behaviour like abandons or team damage. These are minor and expire on their own — see our CS2 cooldowns guide.

Can you appeal a VAC ban?

In practice, no. Valve states VAC bans are permanent and non-negotiable, and Steam Support will not remove them. The extremely rare exceptions involve provable system-wide VAC errors that Valve corrects itself. Assume a VAC ban is final.

How to avoid a VAC ban

  • Never run cheats, hacks or injectors — even "undetected" ones eventually get caught in ban waves.
  • Be careful with third-party software that hooks into the game (some overlays and configs can look suspicious).
  • Keep your account healthy — a clean profile and good trust factor keep you in better lobbies and away from cheaters in the first place.

A legit, well-kept account is the whole game long-term. If you want to strengthen a clean profile, a natural, commended profile helps — see how to increase your CS2 trust factor.
