Best CS2 Launch Options (2026)

Launch options are commands Steam passes to Counter-Strike 2 when it starts. In CS:GO there were dozens of them, and half the community ran a bloated copypasta full of commands that did nothing. Source 2 changed a lot of that — most old launch options were removed or made pointless, and running junk ones can actually cause instability. This guide gives you a clean, honest set that works in 2026, explains what each one does, and calls out the placebo commands so you can stop pasting them.

How to set launch options in CS2

  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Counter-Strike 2Properties.
  3. On the General tab, find the Launch Options box.
  4. Paste your options separated by spaces, then close the window — it saves automatically.

The recommended set

-novid -tickrate 64 -high +fps_max 0 -nojoy

That's it. This is a lean set that helps load times and framerate without touching anything fragile. Here's what each does and whether it's worth it.

Launch options that are worth using

OptionWhat it doesVerdict
-novidSkips the intro movie on startup.Use it — faster boot, no downside.
-highLaunches CS2 at High CPU priority.Try it — helps some CPUs, harmless to remove.
+fps_max 0Removes the in-engine FPS cap.Use it (or set a cap under your Hz for smoother frametimes).
-tickrate 64Sets local/community server tickrate.Optional — matchmaking is server-set; only affects your own servers.
-nojoyDisables controller/joystick support.Minor — tiny overhead saved, fewer input quirks.
-language englishForces the game language.Situational — handy if Steam keeps switching it.
-fullscreen / -windowedForces display mode at launch.Use only to fix a stuck display mode.

Launch options you should NOT use

These are CS:GO-era relics, placebo, or actively risky in Source 2:

  • -d3d9ex — CS:GO/DirectX 9 flag. CS2 uses a different renderer; it does nothing useful.
  • -force-feature-level 12_0 and similar — can cause crashes or black screens; leave the renderer alone.
  • -threads N — CS2 manages threading itself; forcing it can hurt more than help.
  • -noaafonts, -softparticlesdefaultoff, +mat_queue_mode as a launch flag — legacy or better handled in-game/console.
  • Giant 20-command copypastas — the more junk you add, the more likely you introduce a weird bug that's a nightmare to track down.

Rule of thumb: if you can't say what a launch option does, don't run it.

fps_max: cap or uncap?

This is the one people argue about. +fps_max 0 uncaps your FPS entirely — great for raw numbers and benchmarks. But for feel, many players get smoother frametimes (fewer micro-stutters) by capping a little below their refresh rate, e.g. +fps_max 400 on a high-end rig or +fps_max 240 to match a 240 Hz monitor with headroom. Try both and keep whichever feels more consistent — consistency beats a bigger average number. More on this in our CS2 FPS boost guide.

Do launch options really boost FPS?

Honestly? A little. The big FPS gains come from in-game video settings, drivers and Windows tuning, not launch options. Launch options mostly clean up startup and remove artificial limits. Anyone promising a "+100 FPS launch option" is selling you a myth. Treat this set as good hygiene, then do the real work in the FPS boost guide.

A clean starting point

Paste the recommended set, launch the game once, and confirm it starts and looks normal. If anything acts up, remove -high first, then -nojoy. Everything here is reversible — just clear the box to go back to defaults.
